What file type?

There are many types of 3D files we can use but the standard ones are as follows:

Where can I get a 3D model if I don't have one already?

Obtaining a usable 3D model is very easy nowadays. There are 3 Methods:

1. Create one yourself:

There are a number of great programs to use to create models. If you have zero experience but would like to try, there is a great, free website called Tinkercad which is an online based CAD program. Very easy to use and aimed at complete beginners. For more experienced users, programs like Fusion360, Solidworks , ZBrush or Meshmixer are great tools to create printable models.

2. Hire a designer:

You can hire a designer by searching for one in your area, via your favourite search engine or you can go to a freelance website such as and searching for 3D modelers. Here you can hire a freelancer for very competitive prices.

3. Find a pre-made model online:

There are a wealth of websites where you can obtain 3D models. The most popular, free one is called Thingiverse. There are many amazing models on this site, all free to download. They do come with licences however so please check what you are allowed to do with them.
